A1
The A1 language level is the first level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and refers to beginners who can understand and use basic everyday expressions and simple sentences.
For the issuance of an initial residence permit in Austria, proof of A1 language proficiency is required. For more information, click here.
A2
The A2 level is the second language level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At A2 level, people can take part in short, simple conversations about everyday topics. They understand common sentences and expressions, for example when shopping, at work, or when talking about family.

B1
The B1 level is the third stage of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At B1 level, people can take part in simple conversations on many topics, such as work, leisure, or travel. They understand the main information in clear texts and can talk about experiences, plans, and opinions.

B2
The B2 level is the fourth stage of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). People at this language level can express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics. At B2 level, you are able to understand complex texts, present viewpoints, and explain the advantages and disadvantages of different options.

C1
The C1 level is the fifth stage of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Learners at this level have a very good command of the language, allowing them to express themselves flexibly, fluently, and with almost no errors in a wide range of social, professional, and academic contexts. They can also understand longer, complex texts and recognize implicit meanings.

C2
The C2 level represents the highest level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). People with C2 proficiency have an almost native-like command of the language. They can effortlessly understand virtually everything they read or hear – even in complex, abstract, or highly idiomatic contexts. They can summarise information from different sources, presenting arguments and explanations in a coherent way, and express themselves spontaneously, very precisely, and in a stylistically appropriate manner in all situations.
